The Experiment

The Sims is the laboratory.
The framework is bigger than the game.

The Clinical Sandbox Framework uses simulation and sandbox gameplay for clinical conceptualization and intervention design. For this training, The Sims is our shared laboratory — once you understand the framework, the thinking can transfer to other appropriate sandbox and simulation environments when their mechanics fit the clinical goal.

Part 1 · Build the Sandbox
Saturday, September 19 · 11 AM ET

Participants receive a clinical case and learn the Clinical Sandbox Framework. They will:

  • Identify a clinical goal
  • Name the central tension/question
  • Determine relevant roles
  • Select game mechanics
  • Build a sandbox-based intervention
  • Identify what they're curious to observe

You leave Part 1 with an intervention you designed — not one I handed you.

Between Sessions · Run the Experiment
Independent Mini Playthrough

For this introductory training, all participants complete the mini playthrough in The Sims so we learn the framework within a shared sandbox.

During the week between sessions, participants test the intervention they designed. They observe:

  • What happened
  • What did not happen
  • What surprised them
  • What the game mechanics changed
  • What they would modify
  • What new clinical questions appeared
Lab NoteThe goal is not to make the experiment "work." If the sandbox behaves differently than expected, that is information. Document what you notice rather than forcing a perfect result.

Limited asynchronous participant support is available for questions or troubleshooting.

Part 2 · Return to the Lab

Participants return with their playthrough observations. Together we will:

  • Compare intervention designs
  • Examine what different clinicians noticed
  • Identify meaningful gameplay patterns
  • Explore what changed in an actual sandbox
  • Connect observations back to clinical thinking
  • Consider what we'd modify next

Same framework. Same sandbox. Different clinicians. Different experiments. Different data.

Clinical Sandbox Framework — Applied Skills Certificate

This is not a generic attendance certificate. It recognizes demonstrated application of the Clinical Sandbox Framework — from conceptualization through translating gameplay back into clinical thinking.

To earn the Applied Skills Certificate:

  • Build — Complete the Clinical Sandbox Worksheet and design your intervention.
  • Test — Complete the independent mini playthrough and document what happened.
  • Translate Back — Complete the post-playthrough reflection: what you observed, what changed, and how it translates back into clinical thinking.
  • Return to the Lab — Participate in Part 2 and walk through your reasoning.

Your experiment does not have to "work" to demonstrate the skill. The focus is your application of the framework — not whether gameplay produced the outcome you expected.

The Applied Skills Certificate recognizes demonstrated use of The Alchemist's Lab Clinical Sandbox Framework. It is not a professional license, board certification, or continuing education credential.

Who Should Enter the Sandbox?

You do not have to be a gamer.

For clinicians and clinical learners curious about using games, simulation, creativity, and client interests more intentionally. Good fit if you:

  • Work with clients who game or use virtual worlds
  • Enjoy creative clinical tools
  • Want to understand how game mechanics can support conceptualization and intervention
  • Want a structured framework for thinking about sandbox-based clinical work

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE "GOOD AT THE SIMS."

The goal is clinical experimentation, not gaming expertise.

A sandbox isn't automatically an intervention.

Lab Note Not every game, mechanic, client, or clinical goal belongs in a sandbox intervention. The framework asks clinicians to consider appropriateness, development, accessibility, privacy, professional scope, game content, and whether the mechanics actually support the intended clinical goal. It helps clinicians think more intentionally about game-based intervention design — it does not replace professional judgment.

Do I have to use The Sims for the mini playthrough?+
Yes. For this introductory training, The Sims is the shared laboratory used to learn and demonstrate the Clinical Sandbox Framework. Using the same sandbox allows us to compare how different clinicians design, observe, and interpret experiments within the same environment. Once you understand the framework, the thinking can be adapted to other appropriate sandbox and simulation games when their mechanics fit the clinical goal.
Is this CE/CEU training?+
No. This training does not currently provide continuing education credit.
What is the Applied Skills Certificate?+
It recognizes demonstrated application of The Alchemist's Lab Clinical Sandbox Framework. It is not a professional certification, license, or CE credential.
What if my experiment doesn't work?+
Perfect. The purpose of a sandbox experiment is to observe what happens. An unexpected outcome, failed mechanic, or strange gameplay result can become useful data for Part 2.
What if I get stuck during the mini playthrough?+
Participants will have access to limited between-session support for framework questions and basic troubleshooting before Part 2.
Do I have to use this framework with clients afterward?+
No. This training teaches a method of clinical thinking and intervention design. Participants decide whether and how it fits their own professional practice, setting, scope, and clients.
